Anniversary of Boer War

Sir, – This year marks the 110th anniversary of the Anglo Boer War

Sir, – This year marks the 110th anniversary of the Anglo Boer War. Many people walk underneath the Fusiliers Arch in St Stephen’s Green every day, many perhaps not knowing for whom it was erected. As a child I was informed that my great great uncle’s name was on that arch. Over the years, I tried to find out what had happened to 24-year-old Private Dennis Kinsella. Until recently the location of Dennis’s grave was unknown, but with the help of Dr Eugene Campher in KwaZulu-Natal we located the resting place of not only Pte Kinsella, but also that of 26 Royal Dublin Fusiliers whose names are commemorated on the Fusiliers Arch in Stephen’s Green. I believe that this resting place still remains unknown to many.

In total, there are 95 names from the Fusiliers Arch that are also recorded on the war memorial close to Ladysmith where the 26 Royal Dublin Fusiliers were laid to rest.

This letter has been written in light of the pending anniversary of this significant event in our history and the possibility that other people may have an interest or links with some of these soldiers. – Yours, etc,
