Madam, - Fintan O'Toole rightly points out (Opinion, August 12th) the problems that may arise for Bertie Ahern because of the high-handed conduct of his daughter's wedding. Overnight, we saw the politician who delights in his image as a man of the people being transformed into a man of the paparazzi.

Bertie may try to return to his old Bass-drinking ways, but I think this new image is likely to stick with voters, angry about continued cuts and unending price increases. What we saw at that French chateau was not the Teflon Taoiseach - it was just tacky. - Yours, etc.

He would not have permitted a member of his family to be part of such a tacky event - and such an insulting one to the local French people - nor condoned our press photographers and others being harassed by British bouncer-type louts from a glossy tabloid. - Yours, etc.,
