Madam, – The account by Fintan O’Toole (Opinion, August 11th) of the apparent contempt of former taoiseach Bertie Ahern for the Irish people is breathtaking. This is a man who made a virtue of being a socialist and a man of the people, not interested in the trappings of power.

He still refuses to admit that he had any part in the economic mismanagement legacy he left behind. When you bracket his apparent indolence with the examples of Government Ministers using State aircraft like a private airline but at our expense, it is difficult to know how to vent one’s anger.

Thankfully Martyn Turner’s brilliant cartoon (Opinion, August 11th) sums up the bankrupt moral culture of it all! – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Thank God for Fintan O’Toole. He has put into words, so well (as only he can), what I have been thinking, but unable to say about Mr Ahern for a long time now. All I can say is thank you. Well done. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – In responding to Fintan O’Toole’s article on Bertie Ahern, Des Peelo (August 12th) uses the words “unwarranted, unfair and downright nasty”. He does not, interestingly, use the word untrue. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Des Peelo’s response to Fintan O Toole’s opinion piece is interesting. Perhaps he would elaborate on the unwarranted and unfair elements?

I seem to have missed them. – Yours, etc,
