Sir, - In your Editorial of December 30th you ask: "Is it not time also for a debate about devising a form of adoption which would appeal to those thousands of Irish women who now travel abroad for abortions?" Thank you for highlighting a point that has for so long been ignored by the media. So many childless couples are desperately wanting a child and how must they feel when they read of the increasing number of women travelling to England to abort unwanted babies? Surely in these so-called enlightened times we can come up with a better solution than the killing of babies and the resultant crises for most of the mothers in guilt and, often, physical problems. Couples wanting to adopt have a very slim chance of doing so unless they adopt babies from abroad, at a very high cost, which excludes those on low income.
It is not past time for true compassion for both the mother and baby? - Yours, etc., Mrs Mary Stewart,
Donegal Town.
