Sir, - I read that the Abbey has sent a proposal to the Government for a £50 million reconstruction of the present theatre. This presumably is confined to the present site. Are they not going to make the same mistake that Michael Scott so regretted, when the original building was burnt down and he was appointed to rebuild it?
He stated then that the site was only a third of the size necessary. Surely, in this present time of affluence, when it is proposed to spend £240 million on yet another sports stadium, the home of Ireland's greatest contribution to world culture should get the best possible setting and all the space it really deserves.
Rather than a minor side street it should be given either a fine riverside setting or the site of the Carlton Cinema and Fingal County Council's soon to be vacated offices, a major component in the reestablishment of O'Connell Street as the nation's greatest thoroughfare. - Yours, etc.
