Sir, – I am upset as a former men’s captain of University College, Dublin athletic club to see the closure of the track at Belfield (SportsWednesday, November 23rd).

It is eight or so years since I was regularly present at Belfield and I had lost touch with developments there as I live some distance from the campus.

While the college is entitled and perhaps quite right to move all sporting facilities to the Clonskeagh side of the campus – any gap in the interim which sees no track is awful.

During my time, Olympians Jamie Costin, Deirdre Gallagher, David Matthews and James Nolan were based at or near Belfield and regular users of the facility. Many distinguished names bookend that period. A sorry day. – Yours, etc,
