A letter from the past

A chara, – Conor Pope’s article (Summer Living, August 17th) on his Whitworth Place location was most enjoyable. Having resided for 26 years on St Ignatius Road, I am well aware of the topography of the neighbourhood and am very familiar with the pub now known as the Red Parrot. Until circa 1950 it was owned by Peter Leech (it was my father’s local), and then it became McGoldrick’s under whose period of ownership I first approached the altar of the Sanctified Nectar.

It was our local – my friends and brothers – for many years. In a recent nostalgic visit to the Red Parrot it was hard to realise that this was the same pub where years of yarns and laughter took place in the 1950s but I was very pleased to find the capital letter L embossed on the glass door of the men’s toilet.  Peter Leech had left his thumbprint for posterity. – Is mise,
