Sir, – Joseph Foyle (January 14th) proposes that we give Brian Boru’s defeat of the Danes at Clontarf in 1014 pride of place in our upcoming decade of celebrations.
Given the success with which the Danes seem to be able to manage their country relative to our own efforts, maybe Clontarf is one of those battles that it might have been better to have lost. – Yours, etc,
