Remembering the time of our life: Nightclubs and late-night bangers and mash

No night buses, but we had the company of dearly missed friends

Sir, – The talk of a restaurant on the quays, and Gerry Watson’s letter (“A cafe on the north quays,” April 16th), brings back my own memories of where we went late at night to get refreshed as we journeyed home from Leeson Street and various nightclubs in the 1970s in Dublin.

One I remember fondly was The Manhattan on Harcourt Street for its bangers, mash and gravy (euphemistically called chocolate sauce for its dark colour).

Another late-night stop-off was the Coffee Dock in a hotel, a bit more upmarket, where you tried to impress whoever you may have met, especially around pay-day.

Many a late night was spent going over the happenings of the night as we headed home to basement flats in Rathmines and Rathgar.

No late buses but the company of friends, some no longer here. – Yours, etc,

JOHN BERGIN,

Oxton, Wirral,
