Sir, - As sure as the tide turns in Dublin Bay, a tragedy will occur on Seapoint Avenue, at the junction of Trafalgar Terrace, across from the Martello Tower and that wonderful seaside amenity that Dubliners have enjoyed for decades.
Is it not pathetic that old and young alike have to risk their very lives in order to reach that amenity, because Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council refuses to install a pedestrian light? On a road that was originally a dirt track, we now have powerful juggernauts thundering to and from the ferry in Dun Laoghaire, in a 30 m.p.h. zone.
Daily, I watch in horror as terrified parents, grasping their little children, dart between trucks, cars and motor bikes, most of them breaking the speed limit. It is indeed a thundering disgrace that traffic has become more important than pedestrians, than children.
Everyone I talk to at Seapoint agrees that a pedestrian light is desperately needed. Please, is there no one in the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council who feels the same? Never mind the engineers: they seem to get it wrong most of the time; witness traffic-calming decisions, stupid roundabouts, etc. - Yours, etc.,
Siobhβn Purcell, Seapoint Avenue, Monkstown, Co Dublin.
