The whistleblower was in fact Paul van Buitenen.
A headline in last Wednesday’s edition said the Smithwick Tribunal had distanced itself from claims it had been told by a British intelligence officer, Mr Ian Hurst, of an IRA mole in Dundalk Garda Station. What the Tribunal said precisely was that “Any material published relating to Ian Hurst did not emanate from the tribunal and it is our policy that any comment would be inappropriate, pending the completion of public hearings”.
In the introduction to the Beckett letter to Seamas O’Sullivan in Weekend Review on Saturday, it was suggested that he attended the Trinity College scholars’ dinner. The omission of the word “not”conveyed the opposite of what was intended: he did not return to Dublin for the dinner.
