Sir, - Do not the recent utterances by the Minister for Justice regarding the asylum-seeker issue not make a few things even more obvious to the people of Ireland?

The need to appoint at least a junior minister to head an immigration department and oversee a credible and just immigration policy;

the double standards of a society that quite rightly invites Philipino nurses to work in its hospitals and yet proposes to blanket deport people it has come to describe as "economic migrants";

the common sense, logic and compassion that exists in the very welcome proposal for regularisation as outlined by the Irish Catholic bishops and so flatly rejected by the Minister.
