The Young Fine Gael national biannual conference begins this evening with a debate on the controversial topic of party funding.

This will be followed by a question-and-answer session with party leader Mr Michael Noonan.

Mr Noonan will also deliver the keynote address to the conference tomorrow.

The Dublin City University branch of Young Fine Gael caused controversy last week when branch chairman Mr Michael Moriarty called for a reversal of the party’s ban on corporate donations.

One of Mr Noonan’s first acts when he became party leader was to ban corporate donations, but Mr Moriarty says the policy has starved Fine Gael of funds.

"This is not an effort to question the leadership. But there should be conflict between Young Fine Gael and the rest of the party," Mr Moriarty said last week.

Last week, however, Mr Moriarty conceded that a resumption corporate donations to the party would be a public relations mistake.
