The ex-wife of a Dublin man (39) who is accused of her attempted murder told a jury today that on March 29th, 2000, her ex-husband attempted to kill her.

"I saw his face, it was David McDaid," Mrs Dymphna McDaid told the Central Criminal Court .

Mr David McDaid of Sillogue Avenue, Ballymun, Dublin, denies attempting to murder Mrs McDaid (35) at a horse-riding school at Surgalstown, Swords, Co Dublin, on March 29th, 2000.

The accused denies a second charge of assault causing serious harm and a third charge of engaging in conduct causing a substantial risk of death to Mrs McDaid.

During cross examination by Mr Hugh Hartnett, SC, Mrs McDaid said: "The person got off the bike. As he got off the bike, he had an envelope in his hand and he said 'do you know where Lees Cross nursing home?'. He turned, I recognised straight away. I saw his face, it was David McDaid".

Mr Hartnett asked Mrs McDaid could she remember if the visor on the motor bike helmet was up or down, to which Mrs McDaid replied: "I am not sure. I saw his face it was David McDaid".

Mr Hartnett then asked Mrs McDaid why she first told gardaíi that her attacker had removed his helmet while in the stables. "I was traumatised. I had a splitting head ache. I thought I was going to die".

Under cross-examination, Mrs McDaid said she didn't tell gardaí that she pretended to black out to save herself during the attack.

"I saw his eyes, I saw his nose, I recognised his voice. I knew it was David McDaid", she told the jury.

The trial continues before Mr Justice Paul Carney.
