The University of Dublin (Trinity College) has a woman in the running for its provostship for the first time in its history - Dr Frances Ruane, professor of economics.

Five people were in contention for the post when nominations closed at noon yesterday for the election, which will be held on Saturday, March 10th.

As well as Dr Ruane, a former bursar and head of the economics department, they are Prof John Hegarty (physics), Dr Micheal Mac an Airchinnigh (computer science), Prof Patrick O'Meara (Russian) and Prof David McConnell (genetics).
