A teenage girl was remanded in custody today charged in connection with an incident which resulted in two teenagers being treated in hospital after a stabbing incident.

Karen Kelly (18), with an address given at Farran Park near Waterford city, was arrested after the incident in the early hours of yesterday.

The girls, aged 18 and 19, were found injured in John's Lane in the city by Gardai on patrol at about 2am on yesterday.

Gardai said the incident, which happened as Waterford supporters celebrated the county's All-Ireland Semi-final victory over Tipperary, started outside a fast food outlet and is not related to an on-going Traveller feud in the city.

Ms Kelly appeared at Waterford District court today charged with the assault causing harm of both girls.

One of the girls was stabbed in the back, while the other sustained a knife injury to her thigh, it emerged. Both were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital for treatment and have since been released.

Ms Kelly's mother, Edwina Kelly, in evidence today said the accused could live with her at her apartment in Glencove on the Dunmore Road if she "obeyed the rules of the house".

The girl's mother would endeavour to help her daughter to seek help in relation with her drinking, it emerged.

Inspector Padraig Dunne told the court that the accused was due in court on September 10th next regarding one charge each of theft and criminal damage and three charges of assault.

The girl had allegedly engaged in a "similar incident" in the past where a knife had been produced and the assaulted person in that instance had sustained life threatening injuries, the court heard.

Refusing Ms Kelly's bail application, Judge Gerard Haughton believed the accused would re-offend, were she not remanded in custody.

Judge Haughton recommended that the girl undergo pyschiatric asessment and remanded her in custody to appear at the court again next Tuesday.
