A woman, who refused to pay for house repairs on grounds of alleged sub-standard workmanship, has been described by a judge as "brazen" and "dishonest".

Judge Liam Devally said Mrs Theresa O'Malley, of Monasterboice, Crumlin, Dublin, had led everyone "up the garden path". She had produced a photograph of a tearing away of wallpaper in a room in which the builder had not carried out any work in order to make her place look like a tenement from the days of Seβn O'Casey.

The judge told Mr Cormac O'Ceallaigh, solicitor for Austin and Allen General Contractors Ltd, he accepted that work carried out by his client had been done competently. Judge Devally ordered her to pay the £4,200 bill and all legal costs associated with the court proceedings.
