A shop assistant who was sacked after cigarettes and other stock went missing has lost her £30,000 damages claim against her former employer for alleged defamation and wrongful imprisonment.

Mrs Phyllis Campbell (36) of Bonnybrook, Dublin, claimed in Dublin Circuit Civil Court that Mr Lorcan Lynch, publican and owner of Halls newsagents, Parnell Street, Dublin, tricked her into going into a room above his neighbouring bar, Conway's pub, where she was allegedly wrongfully held and interrogated.

Judge Michael O'Shea was told that when stock started to go missing in the shop, surveillance cameras were installed which recorded who was operating the till and every sale and transaction.

Mrs Campbell said video evidence of her failing to record transactions was merely her correcting "over-rung" transactions in order to rectify the till record. She said she had been instructed to carry out this practice by the shop manager.

Judge O'Shea held that in law the questioning of Mrs Campbell in a room above Conway's pub did not constitute wrongful imprisonment and dismissed all claims against the defendant with costs against Mrs Campbell.
