An Irish woman is in a Scottish hospital suffering from serious spinal injuries today after being struck on the head with a traffic cone thrown from a bridge in Edinburgh.
Kate Flannery (23), from Dublin, was hit by the plastic road marker in Edinburgh early yesterday morning.
She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after the incident in Merchant Street in the centre of the Scottish capital at 3.40am.
She was later transferred to the Western General Hospital. Her family has travelled to Edinburgh from Dublin.
Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman
A spokesman for NHS Lothian confirmed that Ms Flannery was in a stable condition in hospital.
Police are trying to find out who threw the cone from the George IV Bridge.
A Lothian and Borders police spokeswoman said: "Our inquiries are still at an early stage, and we are still trying to establish if this was a random incident or a prank that went wrong.
"It's not clear at the moment if the person who threw the cone knows what has happened, but we are trying to establish that," she said.
