A woman died after a car crashed into pedestrians at the junction of Abbey Street and Jervis Street in Dublin at lunchtime yesterday.

The woman and a man were injured when they were struck by the car close to the Jervis Luas stop shortly before 1pm.

Both were taken to the Mater hospital where the woman, aged in her 50s, was later pronounced dead. The man is believed to have suffered leg injuries.

The area was closed to traffic for a time and Luas services were disrupted as gardaí began their investigation into the incident.

The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested under the Road Traffic Act at the scene and is being detained at Store Street Garda station.
