A woman detained as part of a police inquiry which also led to the arrest of a female nursery worker appeared in court today charged with sexual assault.

Angela Allen, who is also charged with distributing, possessing and making indecent images of a child, was remanded in custody after a five-minute hearing at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

The 39-year-old, of Nine Acre Gardens, Bulwell, Nottingham, was ordered to reappear at the city's Crown Court on July 6.

Allen appeared in the dock wearing jeans and a pink polo shirt and spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and address.

She faces a total of 16 charges alleged to have been committed between April 2006 and June 17 this year.

They include four offences of sexual assault on a girl under 13 contrary to the Sexual Offences Act and 12 charges brought under the Protection of Children Act.

There was no application for bail at today's hearing, during which Allen clutched a drinks cup and a tissue.

Allen was detained by Nottinghamshire Police as part of the same inquiry which led the arrest of Plymouth nursery worker Vanessa George.

George (39) has already been charged with sexual assault and making and distributing indecent images of children.

Nottinghamshire Police said Allen's arrest came about as a result of information passed to the force by colleagues in Greater Manchester.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said officers would continue to liaise closely with Greater Manchester Police and Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.
