Windy days lower the production costs of energy in Ireland, the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) said today.

According to analysis revealed by the association at its autumn conference in Galway, strong winds have helped Ireland to save more than €200,000 a day on energy production costs.

Savings in fuel production costs ranged between €212,000 and €280,000 per day, depending on the varying wind levels, analysis from July 2009 showed.

"This clearly demonstrates the real benefits that wind generation can deliver in reducing the cost of generating electricity," IWEA Chief Executive Michael Walsh said.

However, Mr Walsh warned that delays in wind farm connections to the national grid could see Ireland struggling to meet our 2020 renewable energy target.
