Just who is running the country? Urrus, the Community Addiction Studies Training Centre in Santry, Dublin has sent Quidnunc copies of the replies received when members wrote to the Government bemoaning its decision to cut the £20 million Youth Development Fund. They call the correspondence "passing the buck", and no wonder. The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern referred them to Chris Flood, Minister of State for Tourism, Sport and Recreation; the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, put them on to James McDaid, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation; Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy said the issue is a matter for the Minister for Education, Micheal Martin; and Deputy Pat Carey told them it belongs with Willie O'Dea, Minister of State for Education. And this on top of the public disagreements between junior Ministers Liz O'Donnell and Frank Fahey over mechanisms for dealing with child abuse.
