The Irish Times on the Web enjoyed its busiest day on Wednesday, recording about 415,000 page impressions, as thousands of people logged on to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse broadcast live on the site.

The record number of visitors represents a jump of 21 per cent on the last high reached by the site in the run-up to both St Patrick's Day and the launch of ireland.com earlier this year.

Links from sites such as CNN, Le Monde, Yahoo, Indigo and Ireland Online served to generate additional traffic to The Irish Times on the Web, dramatically increasing the number of new visitors to the site, which was the only Irish Website to feature a live video transmission of the eclipse.

For users who were unable to access the live coverage, archived video footage of the eclipse is still available at The Irish Times on the Web's Eclipse '99 site www.ireland.com/special/eclipse

Since the relaunch of the Website under the ireland.com banner, traffic has steadily increased with recently launched services including World Football - a hugely comprehensive soccer site - and MyTV, a personalised television listing service, attracting a broad range of new users to Ireland's most popular Website.

ireland.com also plans to carry a statistical breakdown of the Leaving Certificate results next Wednesday.

This will be the first place anxious students and parents can find the complete list of first-round offers from the Central Applications Office (CAO), at 12.01 a.m. on Tuesday, August 24th.
