A new website for GAA fans to help make Croke Park a carbon neutral stadium was launched jointly by ESB and the GAA in Dublin today.
Unveiled in the stadium by GAA President Nickey Brennan and ESB chief executive Pádraig McManus, www.culgreen.ie allows fans to make energy saving pledges which count against the carbon-saving target set by Croke Park.
The Cúl Green project aims to cut global warming emissions at the stadium by more than two-thirds over the next six years.
GAA fans who register on the site and pledge their own energy-saving activities, like installing low energy light bulbs or taking public transport, will be entered into a monthly draw, with August's prize a pair of tickets for the All-Ireland Football Final on September 21st.
The ESB and the GAA have teamed up to drive the environmental scheme at Ireland’s most popular sporting venue, which is responsible for 4,500 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
The website has been designed to allow fans to make energy-saving pledges online.
It is estimated that fans travelling to games at the stadium produce carbon emissions of 15,000 tonnes a year.
Croke Park has already contracted its electricity supply from a renewable source, according to GAA bosses. The ESB is carrying out an energy audit to help the reduce emissions at the stadium.
