The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has advised consumers to discontinue using a food supplement marketed as a weight loss product due to potential adverse health effects.

The FSAI said it was also advising retailers not to sell Hydroxycut products.

"Whilst there are no reported cases of adverse reactions in Ireland, there have been some reports of liver damage in the US and Finland in relation to the use of these products. The food supplements have been withdrawn by the company in the US," the FSAI said in a statement.

Hydroxycut food supplements are available mainly through health shops and online.

The dietary supplements are marketed for weight loss under the brands Iovate and MuscleTech and are manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences, Oakville, Ontario.

The list of affected products being recalled is:

  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural
