Ulster Unionists were accused today by a rival of "double speak" over the election of Mr Alex Maskey as Belfast's first Sinn Féin Lord Mayor.

Mr Ian Paisley Junior berated UUP members for criticising the election of Mr Maskey while Sinn Féin ministers served in the power-sharing government at Stormont.

"Once again, we are seeing the reality of Ulster Unionism delivering the representatives of armed terror into office," the Democratic Unionist MLA said.

"It is Ulster Unionist policy that has delivered credibility to IRA/Sinn Féin by elevating them to the heart of government in our province.

"It is hardly surprising that a Sinn Féin candidate expects to become Lord Mayor of Belfast when Mr Trimble and his Ulster Unionist colleagues have provided Martin McGuinness with the ability to control the education of our children."

The North Antrim Assembly member claimed unionist voters would not be duped by the "hypocrisy and double speak of (David) Trimble, (Sir Reg) Empey, (Michael) McGimpsey" and others in the UUP.
