The United States has indicted several leaders of Colombia's Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on drug-trafficking charges, US Attorney General Mr John Ashcroft said today.

The indictment specifically names Mr Tomas Molina, described by Mr Ashcroft as the leader of a rebel faction operating on the Colombia-Venezuela border whom he accused of having sent multiple drug shipments to the United States.

Mr Ashcroft told reporters that Washignton would ask Colombia to help in the capture and extradition of Molina and six other FARC rebels.

If sentenced in the United States, the individuals could face up to 40 years in jail, he said.
