Unicef's executive director is warning child mortality rates in Afghanistan will worsen as refugees flee the war-ravaged country.

Speaking at the American Academy of Paediatrics' Conference in San Francisco, Ms Carol Bellamy said Afghan children often died of curable diseases such as measles and diarrhoea before the age of five.

Ms Bellamy told the conference the "plight of Afghanistan's children was terrible even before the recent crisis".
