Boxer Mike Tyson is wanted for questioning by police after a young woman claimed he raped her in California.

Detectives have told the boxer's attorney they want to speak to his client, who has since left the state for Arizona.

The woman, in her early 20s, is alleged to have been attacked in the town of Big Bear. She also claims to have been badly beaten.

Tyson and his entourage of 14 people left Big Bear on Monday after spending about six weeks renting four houses in the resort for a light training camp, reports the New York Post.

He was staying in a three-bedroom house costing $4,200 a month. Three others shared the house with Tyson. Police are believed to have inspected the house on Wednesday.

Big Bear police spokesman Mr Chip Patterson told The Sun: "The woman has formally complained to us. She alleges she was sexually assaulted and we are seeking to interview him.

"Mike Tyson trains in Big Bear and he was certainly in town when the alleged incident happened. But he has now left and we would like him to come back so we can talk to him.

"We have had some tentative talks with his attorney but that is all. There is no warrant for his arrest at this stage but we are continuing to investigate and determine what, if anything, did happen on that night."

Tyson's lawyer Mr Darrow Soll denied the star had attacked the woman, who is understood to have suffered severe cuts and bruises. He added: "The allegations are patently false. We have expressed our willingness to help the police. But we have asked them to provide us with information first and they have not done that."

Tyson (35) spent three years in jail after being convicted in 1992 of raping Ms Desiree Washington, an 18-year-old Miss Black America contestant.
