The National Football League got underway in earnest today after last weekend's opening fixtures were virtually washed out by the bad weather.

In the match-of-the-day, an enthusiastic Tyrone side clipped Galway down to size at Ballinasloe.

The venue survived an early morning pitch inspection and both sides did well to make a honest contest in trying conditions.

Tyrone were well organised from the throw-in - despite playing into a strong breeze - and controlled the game from midfield through the excellent Cormac McAnallen.

The visitors were off to a flying start inside ten minutes after man-of-the-match Stephen O'Neill raced onto a quickly taken Peter Canavan free to fire home the game's only goal.

But Galway kept plugging away and only trailed by a point at the break (1-4 to 0-6).

The second half was a poor affair and sparked little incident of note.

O'Neill and the industrious Brian Dooher kept the scoreboard ticking over while Galway substitute Kevin Walsh kept the All-Ireland champions in touch. Tyrone, however, held out for the points.

Tommy Lyons recorded his first league victory as Dublin manager when his side defeated Donegal 2-10 to 0-14 at Parnell Park.

Lyons' no nonsense football philosophy was notable throughout and the new look Dublin team were comfortable and well drilled in possession.

Donegal, to their credit, made Dublin work all the way for the points. Forward Brendan Devenney did his best to win the game single handily with a splendid return of nine points.

Dublin led 0-6 to 0-5 at the break but stretched that lead soon after the restart when impressive newcomer Alan Brogan netted in the 38th minute.

Devenney then hit back with four unanswered points and Donegal were within one score with 15 minutes to play. Dublin, however, sealed the victory when substitute Johnny Magee scored a late goal.

Offaly's game away to Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh was postponed as a mark of respect for former GAA President John Dowling who died yesterday.

The Division 1A clash between Roscommon and Westmeath was also called off after Dr Hyde Park was deemed unplayable.
