A YOUNG woman was killed and six teenagers, including her brother, were injured when a four-wheel drive vehicle crashed and overturned in north Cork last night.

She was named locally as Ruth Gorey (19) from Kilbehenny, a Leaving Certificate student. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision which happened on the old Mitchelstown to Cahir road just before 7pm.

Gardaí, firefighters and emergency services attended at the scene with four other females and two males in the vehicle being taken by to hospital for treatment.

It is understood four of the passengers were able to make their own way out of the crashed vehicle and two had freed by firefighters.

It is not believed that any of the six passengers received life-threatening injuries in the crash which happened just over a mile north of Mitchelstown. It is understood that one of those injured was Ms Gorey’s 15-year old brother.

Gardaí closed off the road for several hours last night to allow forensic crash investigators to carry out an examination.

Gardaí appealed to anyone who travelled along the road last night between 6.30pm and 7pm to contact them at Fermoy on 025-82100.

In the North, a woman died following a crash on the Frosses road, the main road between Ballymena and Ballymoney. The woman died at the scene after the car she was driving and a truck collided at about 9.20am.
