A footballer on the panel of the Roscommon senior team was killed in a car crash early yesterday morning. Mr Gerard Grogan (23) of Blackstick Road, Roscommon town, was a passenger in a car that crashed at about 4.30 a.m. close to the town. The driver's injuries were described as "serious" by gardaí.

The GAA postponed a National Football League match between Roscommon and Galway yesterday as a mark of respect.

In a seperate incident, former Circuit of Ireland and Manx Rally winner driver Frank Meagher was killed yesterday near his home in Fethard, Co Tipperary.

Mr Meagher, married with two children, died after the incident on the Cloneen-Mullinahone road. No other vehicle was involved.
