Two men have appeared in court today in connection with an incident in which a Garda was stabbed during a planned search of a house in Athlone yesterday.
The two, aged 17 and 20, were arrested following the incident at the house at Grotto View in the town and appeared before Athlone District Court this morning.
The 20-year-old man was charged with assault causing harm to garda Aidan Lyons, while the 17-year-old was charged with unlawfully brandishing a large wooden stick in a threatening manner.
A request for bail was rejected and the two were remanded in custody to appear before the court next Tuesday.
The Garda, who was stabbed in the arm, was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullinagar and later transferred to St James's Hospital in Dublin for treatment.
