Two policemen have been shot dead in western Macedonia near the Albanian border.

The drive-by shooting occurred overnight when the two reservists were on patrol near Gostivar, a town inhabited by Macedonians, Albanians and Turks some 70 kilometres from the capital Skopje, police said.

Macedonian National Radio later reported the alleged killers had been arrested as they tried to cross the border to Kosovo in an Italian-registered car.

Security was increased and Gostivar was sealed off as police blocked main roads and questioned travellers, the state-run radio said.

The shooting was the most serious so far in the area, which was spared separatist violence last year and comes less than three weeks before crucial legislative elections.
