An Islamic militant and an Indian policeman were killed and two policemen wounded today in a clash in near Jammu, the winter capital of Indian Kashmir.

In a separate incident, five policemen were wounded in a hand-grenade attack by rebels on a police convoy near the northern summer capital of Srinagar.

The Jammu clash came as Indian security forces continued an operation to flush out Islamic militants they believe are responsible for a massacre of 28 Hindus at Qasim Nagar, a slum on the outskirts of the city, on July 13th.

When the operation began yesterday, two Indian policemen were killed in a heavy exchange of gunfire.

In the grenade attack, the militants targeted the vehicle of Srinagar Police Superintendent Mukesh Singh but instead hit the police vehicle following his own.

The five injured policemen were rushed to Srinagar's main hospital where doctors said the condition of three of them was critical.

The pro-Pakistan al-Badr militant group claimed responsibility.
