Two people have been killed and 50 injured in India after an anti-Taliban demonstration by Hindu nationalists turned violent.
Fifty-thousand people had converged in the city of Hubli for the birthday celebrations of a Hindu nationalist leader.
They raised slogans against Osama bin Laden and Pakistan, but the police said the incident is not connected to terrorist attacks on America.
The southern city has been the scene of numerous religious riots.
The local press reports police who tried to control the situation resorted to firing weapons after a mob started to throw stones and looting stores.
But a local police chief said: "The violence had nothing to do with the recent terrorist attacks on American cities. What we saw was local hooligans trying to make capital".
