Two men have been charged at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin with the capital murder of Det Garda Jerry Mc Cabe in Co Limerick last year. Det Garda McCabe was shot dead during an abortive post office van robbery. Mr Jeremiah Sheehy (36), of Rathkeale, Co Limerick and Mr Michael O'Neill (46), of Patrickswell, Co Limerick, were each charged with the capital murder at Adare, Co Limerick, on June 7th last year, and with attempting to murder Det Garda Ben O'Sullivan at Adare, Co Limerick, on the same date.
Mr Sheehy was also charged with conspiring with Mr O'Neill and others between June 5th and June 8th last year to commit robbery in Adare and Mr O'Neill was charged with conspiring with Mr Sheehy and others to commit robbery in Adare between the same dates. They were remanded in custody until October 7th. They already faced charges of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life at Adare on June 7th. Mr O'Neill has also been charged with IRA membership on June 18th and Mr Sheehy with IRA membership on June 8th last year.
