TWO MEN were remanded in custody at a special sitting of Galway court on Saturday over the seizure of drugs valued at more than €1 million at Limehill near Loughrea on Friday.
Gardaí and Customs officials discovered the cannabis resin and herb during a search of a house.
The two who appeared before Judge Mary Fahy were Vincent Glynn (44), Limehill, Loughrea, and Cormack O’Halloran (35), 73 Glasgow Park, Limerick.
They were detained overnight at Mill Street Garda station. Insp Ernie Whyte told the court the resin had an estimated street value of more than €1 million.
The two were charged under sections 3 and 16 of the Misuse of Drugs Act. Judge Fahy refused bail for Mr O’Halloran.
Solicitor Adrian McGlynn said his client had no criminal record and would surrender his passport and report daily to his local Garda station. The request was declined following objections by Insp Whyte. The inspector said he was objecting due to the seriousness of the charges, the strength of evidence against the accused and the value of the cannabis seized. He also feared Mr O’Halloran might leave the country.
There was no application for bail on behalf of Vincent Glynn, who was described as an unemployed carpenter. The court was told Mr O’Halloran was a barman.
Neither of the accused replied when charged by gardaí on Saturday. Both were remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison, with consent to free legal aid, to appear again before Galway District Court on June 17th.
