Somali gunmen released two European aid workers today without receiving a ransom after holding them for nine days, a militant leader said.

"The MSF aid workers have been released without condition," said Sheikh Aden Yare, a leader of the al Shabaab group in Bakol region.

The Belgian doctor and Danish nurse were seized in Bakol by gunmen on April 19th after carrying out a nutrition study.

"They are now with us, and we are going to Hudur to hand over the MSF officers. They are free now. And this will not happen again," Yare said.

The Horn of Africa nation is one of the world's most dangerous places for relief workers. Kidnapping is fairly common but gunmen usually treat hostages well in hope of receiving a large ransom.
