Two men found dead after an apartment fire in Waterford city were 33-year-old twin brothers, it emerged this evening.

Two men found dead after an apartment fire in Waterford city were 33-year-old twin brothers, it emerged this evening.

The blaze happened in a ground-floor apartment at the Suir House development in the Canada Square area of the city this morning.

The men (33) were pronounced dead at the scene of the fire at 1pm and their bodies taken to Waterford Regional Hospital. Post mortem’s will be carried out tomorrow at the hospital.

Chief Fire Officer for Waterford City Niall Curtin told ireland.com the fire had burnt itself out when four units of the fire brigade arrived at the scene this morning.

“We were alerted at 11.14am of the apartment fire on Canada Square. On arrival at 11.18 we made entry to the ground floor apartment but found no fire,” he said.

“However, there was a lot of smoke and we discovered two male fatalities.”

He said there was no indication where the fire had started or at what time it had started and that the scene had been handed over to investigating gardai. The fire was contained in the apartment and there was no damage to other premises in the area, he added.

The Canada Square area has a series of modern apartment complexes near the River Suir in Waterford City Centre.

Gardai said a technical examination of the scene will be carried out by Garda Crime Scene Examiners.
