TURIN - A huge fire engulfed the cathedral in the heart of this northern Italian city early this morning and threatened to spread to the adjoining royal palace, police said.
Italian news agency Ansa said the fire was believed to have started in a chapel which houses the famous Turin shroud - a piece of cloth imprinted with the image of a man's body that many take to be the figure of Christ. Local officials said the shroud had been removed from the church and was safe.
