Wild brown trout have been killed following the pollution of a mile-long stretch of the Ballynalty river near Cross, Co Mayo.

Western Regional Fisheries Board staff spent yesterday removing the surviving fish and transporting them to nearby Lough Corrib.

The source of the pollution has been traced to an underground spring, but the cause has not been established.
