Trick or treat?

THEATRE openings have a disquieting similarity to Dublin buses

THEATRE openings have a disquieting similarity to Dublin buses. There's no sign of one for ages and then two arrive at the same time. So it was this week with the eagerly awaited opening of Declan Hughes's Halloween Night taking place at the Andrews Lane Theatre, just two days after the Friel opening at the Abbey.

Fresh from triumph in New York in The Steward Of Christendom, Ali White was in typically ebullient form as was Gerry Stembridge, all set to bring Scrap Saturday back to, the airwaves when Radio Ireland is launched with a big hooley tomorrow at midnight in the Jervis Street Centre.

Laura Magahy of Temple Bar Properties made a foray to the other, side of Dame Street, perhaps bouyed up by the fact that several buildings in Dublin's trendiest quarter have won architectural awards in recent days. Fiach McConghail of the Project Arts Centre waxed lyrical about their forthcoming production of Paula Meehan's Mrs Sweeney, whose cast includes Family stars Ger Ryan and Neili Conroy. There's just no getting away from Roddy Doyle sometimes, is there?
