Miami - A jury yesterday found five large tobacco companies liable for illnesses - including several types of cancer - afflicting Florida smokers, opening the way for a second trial that could set billions of dollars in punitive damages.

The second phase will have nine named plaintiffs representing different types of illness for which the companies were held liable by the jury, in the first class-action lawsuit against big tobacco companies to come to trial in the US.
