A drug abuser got involved in crime when he became homeless while on temporary release from Wheatfield Prison, a court heard yesterday.

Noel O'Connor (21), of Liscairn Gardens, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to handling two sports jackets which had been stolen from Dunnes Stores, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, on July 20th.

Defence solicitor, Mr Michael Kelleher, said the defendant had not been allowed to stay at the family home while on release and committed the offence while homeless.

Judge William Early said he had to impose a three-month sentence as the offence had been committed while on release.
