London - Thousands of people flocked into Britain's main museums on the first day that admission charges were scrapped by the government.

The introduction of free entry had been hailed as "a red letter day for our cultural heritage" by the Culture Secretary, Ms Tessa Jowell, who launched the scheme with Mr Chris Smith MP, at the Science Museum's new Alfa Romeo exhibition.
