Two Vincent Van Gogh paintings were stolen from Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum early today by thieves who entered the building through the roof.

The theft of the two paintings by the 19th-century Dutch master was discovered early this morning before the museum, in the heart of the Dutch capital, had opened its doors.

"There has been a burglary. The thief or thieves entered the building by the roof. Two paintings are missing. We are still searching the premises and we are still investigating the scene of the crime," a police spokesman said.

Earlier this week, thieves stole diamond jewellery worth millions of euros from a Dutch museum exhibiting tiaras and necklaces borrowed from European kings and queens.
