The man who was late for dinner

Bill Clinton's security men in Ballybunion did not let up for a second

Bill Clinton's security men in Ballybunion did not let up for a second. They played a fourball behind the former president with Eoin Liston and Liston's brother-in-law, Pat Hitchen.

Sources close to Ballybunion Golf Club said the security men were dismayed when the former US president announced he would embark on a second 18 holes. "We're knackered", they said - or whatever US secret service people say in those circumstances.

Their horror was compounded when a local asked if they were enjoying playing with "the Bomber" (the nickname Liston earned during his glory days with the Kerry football team).

Quidnunc hears that Clinton enjoyed himself enormously, to the point that he did not wish to leave Ballybunion. He was due in Dromoland Castle at 7p.m. for cocktails and dinner with the O'Reillys.

Dick Spring, his golfing partner, and no friend of O'Reilly from Spring's days as Minister for Energy, kept reminding Clinton in the Ballybunion clubhouse of his appointment in Dromoland, but Clinton was beguiled by Kerry hospitality and finally arrived for dinner in Dromoland at approximately 12.10 a.m. We hear the O'Reillys were not amused.
