Tesco posts 11% rise in first-quarter sales

Tesco's group sales for the first quarter were up 11 per cent

Tesco's group sales for the first quarter were up 11 per cent. Like-for-like sales, stripping out the effects of new store openings, were up 4.5 per cent - in line with Tesco's forecasts.

Tesco says this increase was driven by strong volume growth of 5.8 per cent.

It says: "We have continued to see deflation in the core business reflecting our determination to deliver the best value for our customers."

Sales growth was driven by its strategy to achieve continued strong core performance; increasing non-food sales; strong performance across its international business; and the success of retailing services.

International sales were up 32 per cent in the first quarter, in line with Tesco's plans.
